A hermit crab on the warm sand of Mo’orea. Taking its time to come out of its shell. We film it on an iPhone 12 Pro Max, out of sheer wonder.
On the drive home, a question : what if it was taking its time because it knew something we didn’t?
We’d been doing VFX for a while. We figured we’d try something we’d never done before: a cinematic nuclear explosion.
Then a date came back to us. January 26th, 1996. France’s last nuclear test in the Pacific. No one ever filmed it from the ground, in Full HD. Which is, of course, perfectly normal.
Our job is to show what we shouldn’t be able to see.
We invented an imaginary documentary filmmaker. Someone who, on that day, would have had the courage to set down his camera at hermit-crab height.
